Bittium Tough SDR Handheld™

Advanced software-defined tactical radio for dismounted soldiers.

Next-Generation Tactical Handheld Radio

Bittium Tough SDR Handheld™ is a next-generation software defined tactical radio for dismounted soldiers, such as squad or platoon leader. With the radio it is possible to bring broadband data transfer and voice to mobile troops across the battlefield.

The Tough SDR radios provide a uniquely wide range of frequencies, 30-2500 MHz without gaps, across several frequency bands. Together with flexible configuration options and routing networks, even thousands of radios in one network are supported.

With Bittium Tough SDR Handheld troops can communicate securely over narrowband and wideband waveforms. The radio can flexibly use the best performing waveform considering the conditions and the mission. The uniquely wide range of frequency bands in the radios improves combat survivability. Using several waveforms improves compatibility and enables operations on different levels and missions. Also legacy and national proprietary waveforms can be seamlessly ported to the radio with national COMSEC and TRANSEC.

With the Software Defined Radio (SDR) based Bittium Tactical Wireless IP Network (TAC WIN) battlegroups can create high-data-rate wireless IP networks as a backbone to support command and control (C2) data transmission during military operations. Compared to existing tactical data link networks, flexibility to use the Bittium solution in different frequency bands and network structures provides cost effectiveness, ease of use, and efficiency.

Bittium TAC WIN network can be deployed in any location. It enables formation of an independent IP network and is compatible with existing infrastructure, both wire-line and wireless.

As it is software-defined, the system is versatile, can be easily upgraded and it is easy to adapt. The system enables a mesh network solution with high-data-rates and automatic network configuration required by battlegroups on the move.

Bittium TAC WIN has excellent performance and form factor as both network node and router functionalities are integrated into a single product.

About ESSOR

The aim of the ESSOR program is to develop the European Software Defined Radio technology in order to improve the capabilities for cooperation in coalition operations. The first phase of the programme was successfully completed in 2015. In addition to the European High Data Rate Waveform, the first phase of the program produced and validated the definition for the European Software Defined Radio Architecture which was ported and qualified on six different European platforms. The following ESSOR OC1 phase aims to enhance the operational capabilities of the ESSOR High Data Rate Waveform (HDR WF), developed in the previous phase of the ESSOR programme, in order to meet the most demanding requirements of the battlefield with secure, high capacity land tactical communications.
